How Can Motorcyclists Stay Safer During Riding Season?

As the sun peeks out from behind the clouds and the rain finally (mostly) subsides, Washington State motorcyclists eagerly anticipate the glorious stretch we call "riding season." Typically kicking off in late spring and lasting through early autumn, this is the window to truly enjoy the open roads, stunning scenic routes, and the unique freedom that comes with two wheels. But with that freedom comes significant responsibility. This season, let's commit to making it the safest one yet.

Gear Up, Every Single Ride

We've all heard it, but it bears repeating: proper gear is your first and best line of defense.

  • Helmet: This is non-negotiable. Choose a DOT-compliant full-face helmet. It’s not just about protecting your head in a crash; it also shields you from wind, road debris, and the elements.

  • Armored Jacket and Pants: Abrasion-resistant materials like leather or specialized textiles with built-in armor for elbows, shoulders, and knees can prevent severe injuries in a slide.

  • Gloves: Protect your hands from impact and abrasion. Even a low-speed fall can cause significant hand injuries.

  • Boots: Sturdy, over-the-ankle boots protect your feet and ankles, which are vulnerable in a crash.

  • Visibility: Especially in Washington's often-overcast conditions, make yourself seen. Brightly colored gear, reflective strips, and a high-visibility vest can make a huge difference.

Sharpen Your Skills

Riding a motorcycle is a dynamic skill that benefits from continuous practice and refinement.

  • Motorcycle Safety Courses: Even experienced riders can benefit from advanced riding courses. They help refresh skills, introduce new techniques for hazard avoidance, and build confidence. The Evergreen Safety Council offers excellent programs right here in Washington.

  • Practice Emergency Maneuvers: Regularly practice quick stops and evasive maneuvers in a safe, controlled environment. Knowing how your bike reacts under pressure is crucial.

  • Stay Attentive: Riding requires your full attention. Avoid distractions, scan the road ahead for potential hazards, and always be thinking a few steps ahead.

Be Hyper-Aware of Other Drivers

This is perhaps the most challenging aspect of motorcycle safety because it's largely out of your control. Other drivers often fail to see motorcycles, especially at intersections or when changing lanes.

  • Assume You’re Invisible: Ride defensively with the mindset that no one sees you. This will encourage you to anticipate dangerous situations.

  • Maintain Space: Give yourself ample following distance from other vehicles. This provides more time to react if traffic suddenly stops or swerves.

  • Lane Positioning: Strategically position yourself in your lane to maximize visibility to other drivers and to give yourself an escape route. Avoid riding in blind spots.

  • Look Twice for Bikes: Unfortunately, many drivers don't look specifically for motorcycles. Be extra cautious at intersections, even when you have the right of way.

Pre-Ride Checks

A quick check before each ride can prevent mechanical issues from turning into major problems.

  • Tires: Check tire pressure and tread depth. Proper inflation is critical for handling and stability.

  • Brakes: Test both front and rear brakes for proper function and feel.

  • Lights and Signals: Ensure your headlight, taillight, and turn signals are all working correctly.

  • Fluids: Check oil and other fluid levels.

  • Chain/Belt: Inspect for proper tension and lubrication.

Plan Your Ride

Knowing your route and conditions can reduce stress and allow you to focus more on riding.

  • Weather: Washington weather can change quickly. Check the forecast before you head out, especially if you’re planning a longer trip.

  • Route Knowledge: Be aware of road conditions, potential construction, or heavy traffic areas.

  • Ride Sober: Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impaired riding dramatically increases your risk of an accident.

Riding season is a cherished time for us motorcyclists in Washington. By taking proactive steps to gear up, sharpen our skills, remain vigilant, and maintain our bikes, we can all contribute to a safer environment for ourselves and our fellow riders.
